When you are doing your CV you have to do a profile at the top nowadays don't you? A "I am fantastic" bit before you get into detail. Ok I get that. But what do you put in a cover letter? You can't repeat the same thing.... so what the F do you put in it without rehashing your CV. Any ideas?

Well I always approach it that the Job Description is the question. This is what we want, can you do it? Your cover letter is the answer to that question. So you take the points that have been asled in the job description and you answer them one by one by highlighting your relevant experience and skills. The CV is the back-up material and proof that you aren't spoofing.
For example. The job is for a marketing manager. The description says they want someone who will work closely with the sales department to drive lead generation. Your cover letter highlights how your direct marketing campaign in Jan 2009 had a 15% return and generated 375 qualified sales leads at a cost of €4000. Your CV will show that you were a Marketing Executive in Sample Company, Longford from November 2007 until May 2009 and had responsiblity for Direct Marketing.
Your cover letter reduces the work away from the person hiring. You prescreen your CV and pick out the bits that are most relevant. It's the executive summary
