I have completed a Higher Diploma in Sound Engineering and also have Microsoft and City and Guilds qualifications in web authoring (lower end of the scale). I am also very good at fixing PCs and adding PCs to networks etc (have done some work as a self-employed computer engineer). I am currently on the dole and receiving rental supplement and I now need to make a decision as to whether to look for work (any kind of work as I am located in Kilkenny and want to remain here) or to try for one of the "free" college places on offer to try to upgrade my computer qualifications. Any advice?

Have you had a look at the degrees in Tipperary Institute? There are quite a few computer/ multimedia type ones and they usually have places up for grabs fairly late and it would be within travelling distance for you im sure (thurles or clonmel campus)

I would be going the Degree route if i was you. You are now in a great position to benefit from the Back to Education Allowance and you may also be entitled to a Grant. Yes it does seem that Tipp Institute have a few vacancies already but you should also try Carlow IT which i believe has a kilkenny campus.
